A subproject focused on extending the laboratory system for real-time crystallisation monitoring and adaptive direct nucleation control.
CrystExtDNC builds on the results of CrystAPC by developing and integrating a system that connects PAT instrumentation, image processing, communication with laboratory equipment and control algorithms. The goal is to support real-time process supervision and an adaptive strategy that encourages the dissolution of smaller crystals, growth of larger crystals and a narrower particle-size distribution.
In-line monitoring
Observation of crystallisation directly in the process, focused on data needed for fast control decisions.
Direct nucleation control
Adaptive heating and cooling cycles for selective dissolution of small crystals and growth of larger fractions.
Image processing and machine learning
Advanced analysis of process images to estimate the crystal population state during an experiment.
Quality by control
Development of control approaches that connect final product quality with the selected process strategy.
Integration
Laboratory system integration
- Software and hardware elements integrated for PAT application
- OPC-based communication with PAT instruments and laboratory equipment
- Application of PAT data in real-time control
Optimisation
Automatic experimental optimisation
- Planning the next experiment from the results of previous iterations
- Connecting the crystalliser, PAT measurements and process model
- Reducing experimental uncertainty through a closed loop
